Why should we know how to argue? Why should we care what someone else writes about or thinks? The reasons are part of our DNA, we want to be right and have world support to prove it. The way this happens is through C.O.R.E. In order to be successful in life you need to be CURIOUS  about everything and be OPEN to learn from everything, be RESILIENT and fight through adversity and challenges so that you can be fully ENGAGEDin your life. Take this to heart and there is no question that you will be UNSTOPPABLE and EXTRAORDINARY EVERY DAY!

Argument
How often would you like to be able to win an argument? Or be able to convince someone to hire you? Undersdtanding how to write an argument is the first step. It may sound daunting and complicated but here are some sure fire ways to make sure you succeed:

Step One: Choose a side, and base it on facts, this is key!

Step Two: Read carefully and choose evidence that supports your claim and the reasons that back up your claim.

Step Three: Explain why your evidence is valid. Always ask yourself why the reader should know this fact. Always WHY, WHY, WHY!

Step Four: Refute your claim, in other words, explain what others may think if they were to disagree with you. Does this sound familar? It is the counter-claim. But be careful don't support it too much always explain why your claim is best!

Step Five: Conclusion! Restate your claim and bring in your CALL TO ACTION!

Literary Analysis

During the next year we will explore various different non-fiction texts and speeches to make connections to ourselves and our world around us.

We will identify the central idea of the text and explain an author's strategy to help analyze the text.

We will learn literary elements such as conflict, characterization, and imagry, as well as literary devices such as repitition, alliteration, ethos, and rhetorical questions.

Reading Stamina
This year we will work on reading with comprehension. This includes reading for extended periods of time, and making connections to our lives. Reading helps us discover ourselves, and helps us fully construct our identity.

Can you name your favorite novel, play, or short story? Why do you think you love it? This is what we will draw upon to make reading meaningful.
